Best of NOLA Food Writing Award
Description, Eligibility, Judging Criteria and Entry Rules
Description
1) The Best of NOLA Food Writing Award is a special one-time food writing award designed to: (a) encourage contributions to the FWEP Section NOLA Giveback Campaign and (b) publicly recognize the most outstanding contributions to that effort.
2) In addition to the four existing Bert Greene Awards, one Best of NOLA Food Writing Award will be presented in 2009. All forms of journalistic writing (Internet, essay, magazine and newspaper) will be accepted into this single category.
3) The award administration and eligibility/judging criteria will follow the existing guidelines for the Bert Greene Food Journalism Awards, with exceptions noted in Eligibility and Judging Criteria, below. The call for entries will coincide with the call for the 2008 Bert Greene Awards in Fall 2008.
4) The Best of NOLA Food Writing Award will be presented at the awards ceremony at the IACP 2009 Conference in Denver, Colorado.
Eligibility
Eligibility criteria will follow those in the existing guidelines for the Bert Greene Food Journalism Awards, with the exceptions noted below:
1) Any food-related article, column or essay pertaining to the Louisiana area impacted by Hurricane Katrina (New Orleans and the surrounding area) published between the start of the IACP Giveback Campaign (June 2007) and the submission deadline for the Bert Greene Food Journalism Awards (December 2008) will be eligible. Any piece already submitted for one of the four existing Bert Greene Awards (essay, Internet, magazine, and newspaper) is also eligible for the Best of NOLA Food Writing Award; however, a separate application and application fee are required.
2) Subject matter may be diverse. Examples of eligible subject matter include, but are not restricted to:
- Food, wine and beverage, and food-related travel of the area
- Profiles of food-related businesses or food professionals in the area
- Food culture of the area
- Profiles of native ingredients and/or recipes that illustrate the culture or the unique contributions of the area
3) Any article, column or essay that received a Bert Greene Food Journalism Award in 2008 will be excluded. The same piece may win one of the four existing Bert Greene Awards as well as the Best of NOLA Food Writing Award in 2009.
Judging Criteria
Judging criteria will follow those in the existing guidelines for the Bert Greene Food Journalism Awards, with the exception noted below:
1) In addition to being judged against the criteria already established for the Bert Greene Awards (mastery of language, scope and depth of research, organization, focus, etc.), each entry will be judged for fit with the goals of the FWEP Section NOLA Giveback Campaign, as expressed in the following statement:
To increase the culinary awareness and recognition of New Orleans and the surrounding Katrina-afflicted areas so as to contribute to the economic recovery of this region. Stories should stimulate reader interest in supporting the area’s economy and/or the ongoing recovery effort.
Entry Rules
All entry rules are the same as those of the Bert Greene Food Journalism Awards.
